Advancing education and advocacy in elder law in Maryland and the District of Columbia

What We Learned from the 2026 Maryland/DC Chapter Member Survey

Nearly every member who responded believes the Maryland/DC Chapter is moving in the right direction. Even more encouraging, respondents overwhelmingly praised the Chapter’s educational programming, communications, and collegial culture while offering thoughtful ideas for making an already strong Chapter even stronger.

The 2026 Maryland/DC Chapter Member Survey was designed to do more than measure member satisfaction—it was an opportunity to better understand what members value most, identify emerging needs, and gather ideas that will help shape the Chapter’s future. Part I of the survey invited members to anonymously share their perspectives on the Chapter’s strengths, opportunities for improvement, educational priorities, and overall direction.

In the sections that follow, we’ll explore:

  • Who responded to the survey and the breadth of experience they represent.
  • Overall member satisfaction and perceptions of the Chapter’s direction.
  • The programs, services, and benefits members value most.
  • Opportunities for growth, including mentorship, networking, and member engagement.
  • Differences in perspective between newer and long-time members.
  • Future educational topics members would like the Chapter to explore.
  • How the Board will use this feedback to guide future educational programming and Chapter initiatives.

Most importantly, this report reflects the voices of the members who continue to shape the future of the Maryland/DC Chapter.

Who Responded?

Nineteen members completed the anonymous first part of the survey, representing attorneys at every stage of NAELA membership.

  • 42% have been members for more than 10 years.
  • 58% have been members for 10 years or less, including:
    • 26% who joined within the past year.
    • 16% with one to three years of membership.
    • 16% with four to ten years of membership.

Respondents also reflected varying levels of Chapter participation.

  • 32% described themselves as very engaged.
  • 26% described themselves as somewhat engaged.
  • 42% described themselves as occasionally engaged.

In other words, the survey reflects feedback from both newer and long-time members, as well as members who participate frequently and those who engage more selectively.

Overall Satisfaction Remains Strong

Members expressed a high level of confidence in the Maryland/DC Chapter and its direction.

  • Nearly 9 out of 10 respondents rated their overall satisfaction with the Chapter as either 4 or 5 out of 5.
  • No respondent rated the Chapter below a 3.
  • Almost every respondent agreed that the Maryland/DC Chapter is moving in the right direction.
  • Members also overwhelmingly indicated that they would recommend Chapter membership to colleagues.

These results suggest that the Chapter continues to provide meaningful value while maintaining the trust and confidence of its members.

Education Continues to Be the Chapter’s Greatest Strength

If there was one clear takeaway from the survey, it was this: members place tremendous value on the Chapter’s educational programming. Respondents consistently identified education as one of the primary reasons they remain engaged with the Maryland/DC Chapter.

  • Lunch & Learn programs were the highest-rated member benefit.
  • The Chapter Listserv was consistently identified as one of the Chapter’s most valuable resources.
  • Members also placed a high value on the Medicaid Planning Series and Medicaid Review Sessions.
  • Practical, practice-focused education continues to be the hallmark of the Chapter’s programming.

The survey confirms that members value educational programs they can immediately apply in their practices, along with opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues and stay current on developments in elder and special needs law.

The Chapter Listserv Remains One of Our Most Valuable Member Benefits

Beyond educational programming, members consistently identified the Chapter Listserv as one of the most valuable benefits of membership. More than just an email forum, the Listserv serves as a trusted resource where members can seek guidance, share knowledge, and collaborate with colleagues facing similar issues.

  • Receive practical answers to day-to-day practice questions.
  • Learn from the experience of fellow elder and special needs law practitioners.
  • Stay informed about legislative and policy developments affecting clients.
  • Share ideas, resources, and best practices with colleagues across Maryland and the District of Columbia.

The survey responses reinforce that the willingness of members to share their knowledge and experience is one of the Chapter’s greatest strengths and a defining characteristic of our professional community.

Members See Opportunities to Make a Strong Chapter Even Stronger

While the survey results reflect a high level of member satisfaction, respondents also offered thoughtful suggestions for strengthening the Chapter in the years ahead. Rather than calling for major changes, members encouraged the Chapter to build upon its existing success by expanding opportunities for connection, learning, and professional development.

  • Mentorship: Several members expressed interest in a formal mentorship program that would connect newer practitioners with experienced elder law attorneys.
  • Networking: Members suggested creating additional opportunities to build relationships through informal lunches, coffee meetups, and social events.
  • Access to Programs: Respondents recommended recording educational programs, when possible, to make them available to members who cannot attend live.
  • Practice-Focused Education: Members encouraged the Chapter to continue offering practical, real-world programming that can be immediately applied in their practices.

These suggestions reflect a shared desire to build on the Chapter’s strong foundation while continuing to meet the evolving needs of our members.

Future Educational Programming

Members shared a wide range of ideas for future educational programming, reflecting the diverse practices and interests within the Maryland/DC Chapter. While Medicaid planning and estate planning remain core areas of interest, respondents also expressed enthusiasm for emerging topics and practical guidance that can enhance both client service and law practice management.

  • Artificial Intelligence and technology in elder law practice.
  • Advanced Medicaid planning strategies and updates.
  • Maryland and District of Columbia Medicaid distinctions.
  • SSI, SSDI, and Medicaid Waiver programs.
  • Elder fraud and financial exploitation.
  • Retirement accounts and IRA planning.
  • Practice management and business development.
  • Emerging estate planning issues and legislative developments.

The breadth of these suggestions demonstrates that members value educational programming that is both timely and practical. The Board will use this feedback to help shape future Lunch & Learn programs, webinars, and other educational initiatives.

New and Long-Time Members Share a Common Vision

One of the most encouraging findings from the survey is that member satisfaction remained consistently high regardless of how long respondents had belonged to NAELA. While newer and long-time members naturally emphasized different priorities, both groups expressed strong confidence in the Chapter and its future.

  • Newer members expressed the greatest interest in mentorship, networking opportunities, and foundational educational programming to help build their practices.
  • Experienced members placed particular value on advanced educational programming, the Chapter Listserv, and staying current on legal and legislative developments.
  • Both groups rated the Chapter highly for its educational offerings, communications, and overall direction.
  • Members across all experience levels agreed that the Chapter provides meaningful professional value and fosters a collegial community.

The survey suggests that the Maryland/DC Chapter is successfully serving attorneys throughout every stage of their careers while creating opportunities for experienced practitioners and newer members to learn from one another. As the Chapter looks ahead, strengthening those connections through mentorship and collaboration will benefit the entire membership.
