Medicare Cost Increases 2025
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued the Medicare Cost Increases 2025, revealing that health care expenses will rise across the board, just as they did in 2024.
Medicare Part B Changes for 2025
Medicare Part B covers the cost of doctor visits and other preventative care and outpatient medical services. The cost of Part B’s standard monthly premium and annual deductible will both go up beginning January 1 of next year:
- 2025 Part B base monthly premium = $185 (up from $174.40 in 2024)
- 2025 Part B annual deductible = $257 (an increase from $240 in 2024)
The 2025 Part B premium costs are once again outpacing the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) figures. (The COLA is increasing just 2.5 percent from 2024 to 2025.)
Higher-Income Monthly Adjustment Amounts:
Keep in mind that Medicare enrollees who have a higher income (more than $106,000 a year, in 2025) will pay a higher Medicare Part B premium, which consists of the standard premium plus a monthly adjustment amount based on their higher income.
The actual amount is derived from the enrollee’s modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), a number used by the government to decide if you qualify for certain benefits or if you need to pay more for things like Medicare.
The total monthly premiums for high-income beneficiaries are as follows:
| Individual MAGI | Joint MAGI | Total Monthly Premium |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ $106,000 | ≤ $212,000 | $185.00 |
| $106,001–$133,000 | $212,001–$266,000 | $259.00 |
| $133,001–$167,000 | $266,001–$334,000 | $370.00 |
| $167,001–$200,000 | $334,001–$400,000 | $480.90 |
| $200,001–$500,000 | $400,001–$750,000 | $591.90 |
| ≥ $500,000 | ≥ $750,000 | $628.90 |
For example, an individual with a MAGI between $133,001 and $167,000 will pay a total monthly premium of $370.00, which includes the standard premium plus an additional $185.00.
These adjustments ensure that higher-income beneficiaries contribute more to the Medicare program.
Medicare Part A Changes for 2025
CMS also announced that Medicare Part A deductibles and co-pays will also increase. Part A enrollees receive coverage for inpatient care in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, hospice, and some other settings for a certain number of days before they have to pay a co-pay. Part A 2025 increases will be:
- Inpatient hospital deductible = $1,676 (up from $1,632 in 2024)
- Coinsurance for hospital stay, days 61 to 90 = $419 per day (up from $408 per day in 2024)
- Coinsurance for hospital stay, days 91 onward = $838 per day (an increase from $816 in 2024)
- Coinsurance for skilled nursing facility, days 21 to 100 = $209.50 per day (up from $204 in 2024)
Most people do not pay a premium for Part A because they (or their spouse) had paid Medicare taxes during their employment years. For those who do, the full Part A monthly premium in 2025 will be $518 (up from $505 in 2024).
Preparing for Higher Medicare Costs in 2025
In conclusion, the 2025 Medicare cost adjustments reflect a continued rise in health care expenses, impacting both Part A and Part B enrollees. With increases in premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance rates, beneficiaries will need to budget for higher out-of-pocket costs, especially those subject to income-related premium adjustments. These changes, outpacing the modest Social Security COLA increase, highlight the growing financial burden of health care for retirees and underscore the importance of proactive financial planning to manage these rising expenses.
