Video: Moving to Maryland, Virginia or DC? Check Your Advance Directive Validity
Transcript
Hi this is David from Right Size Law.
If you move between states or live part-time in different states, you need to know if your advance directive is valid in each state.
Advance directives outline your end-of-life decisions, when you are no longer able to communicate your wishes.
As state laws vary, a directive created in one state may not be valid in another state.
Some states, like Maryland and Virginia explicitly recognize out-of-state directives. Others, like the District of Columbia, do not have explicit provisions but may still accept your advance directive if it meets local requirements.
Therefore, if you are moving or living part time in another state, check if your new state laws explicitly authorize out-of-state directives. If not, make sure your directive complies with the laws of your new state.
